The word composition means “the act of combining parts or elements to form a whole”—and that is exactly what we will be doing in this class. Specifically, we will be focusing on the act of putting together words, sentences, paragraphs, images, tables, etc. to make effective texts for different purposes.
In order to effectively combine words into a whole text, one must understand: - the parts of writing—punctuation, word parts, words, sentences, and paragraphs - how the parts of writing make meaning when combined - how to format and craft writing in response to different writing situations and audiences
Philosophy
Ms. Berg firmly believes that teaching students to write effectively in standard English provides access to power and privilege. In order to succeed in college and beyond, students must have a solid grasp of standard English so they can “switch” approaches for professional and academic writing and speaking purposes.
Ms. Berg is committed to helping students acquire fluency in standard English and improve their writing by celebrating successes, diagnosing writing issues, and providing clear solutions for approaching those issues.
